Nappy rash: How to reduce your baby's chances of developing it

Nappy rash is one of those things that your baby will experience at least once before the age of two.

A condition generally caused by wearing a wet or dirty nappy for too long, it can make your little one irritable and feel uncomfortable.

However, by understanding how and why it happens you'll be able to reduce your baby's chances of developing it.

1. What causes it

When a baby wets a nappy, bacteria reacts with the urine on the diaper to form ammonia.

If the nappy isn’t changed quickly, the ammonia can 'burn' the baby’s delicate skin.

If a nappy is wet and soiled at the same time, this causes a different chemical reaction which can irritate and damage the skin even more.

However, this is not the only cause. Underlying conditions like eczema or an allergic reaction to a particular substance like detergent or soap can also cause it to develop.

Teething can also be one of the culprits.

2. Symptoms to be on the lookout for

It is fairly easy to spot when your little one has nappy rash.

As well as being cranky and irritable, their bum will have bright red spots and their skin will be dry and cracked.

They may also have ulcers and blisters.

3. How to reduce your baby's chances of developing it

Thankfully, there are a number of really simple ways to help lower your tiny tot's chances of developing it.

  • Change their nappy regularly
  • Let their bum breathe a little at least once a day i.e leave the nappy off for as long as you dare!
  • Avoid wipes that contain irritants or alcohol
  • Use a barrier cream or powder after every nappy change
  • Make sure Baby's bum is thoroughly dry after each change (pat dry – don't rub)

4. What can you do if your baby has nappy rash?

If your baby does develop nappy rash, it's important you don't stress about it too much because there are plenty of things that you can do.

  • Leave the nappy off for as long as possible
  • Change your baby regularly
  • Apply a barrier like CaldeSpray from the makers of Caldesene every time you change them. This concentrated spray contains zinc oxide milk and has excellent skin adherent and skin protective properties which form a protective barrier against wetness.

Most babies will develop the rash at least once (if not more) in their early years so it's important to be prepared for when it does happen.
