Mum nails why we need to stop making jokes about incompetent dads

The trope of the hopeless dad is a pretty popular one. All you have to do is watch a sitcom or look at the Internet to see dads hopelessly and dramatically fail to handle even the smallest of domestic and child-rearing tasks. 

You might hav a chuckle at first, but ultimately this stereotype of the the helpless dad is damaging. Not only is it discouraging all the great dads out there, but it discourages boys and young man from embracing their nurturing abilities. 

Mum and broadcaster Kristina Kuzmic is one of the many parents who is tired of this trope. Taking to Facebook in honour of Father's Day she spells out exactly why. 

She begins to explain why she doesn't create videos that mock dads:

"Though I realise that making dads look like incompetent, childish idiots is pretty popular on the Internet (and the media in general) I will never do it." 

The first reason, dads are parents too. It's not mums and extra man-child. 

"For the same reason I wouldn't mock mums. I’m rooting for all parents."

Secondly, making fun of dads doesn't exactly encourage them to do a better job.

"Because I don’t think mocking people will make them step-up and do a better job. It will only cause them to do even less. (As I’ve said before: Feeling like a loser has never helped anyone thrive in life.)"

And lastly, for the sake of her sons, who might become fathers one day themselves.

"I have sons who might someday decide to be dads, and I refuse to create any content that would make my boys think that men are less capable than women of being great parents or homemakers." 

Ultimately, no one is perfect, even parents…

"No parent is perfect. That goes for both mums and dads. And if men talked about moms the way women talk about dads, it would be considered completely unacceptable. So let’s make it unacceptable to label an entire gender as inadequate. 

"And dads, please know that you matter!" 

Both mums and dads are loving her words of wisdom.
